Where does the AI live?
A private AI that runs at home on one PC with no way to reach the internet, told as a house you can walk through, then flipped to the real wiring. I drew it for my 11-year-old after she read my post for businesses and asked where the AI actually lives. The real divide of her lifetime will be centralised against your own: holding your own data and running your own AI is a skill the next generation will need.
The street outside
Most AI lives in the cloud: you type a question, it leaves your house to someone else's servers like ChatGPT or Gemini, an answer comes back, and a copy of your words stays there.
A locked building
The machine is on its own network, separate from the family wifi, with no route to the internet. The home router reaches the internet both ways; the AI sits behind a second router, a firewall and a sandbox, and every way out is blocked.
The guest, and its brain
The brain is a model that has to fit inside the graphics card's memory, like liquid in a container. I run Qwen 3.5 4B on a 6 GB card, loaded by Ollama. Bigger open models like Llama 3.3 70B need a bigger GPU or a 128 to 256 GB Mac to approach frontier quality.
An AI that does the job, not just talks
A plain chatbot only talks; an agent acts. It opens your files, works through them and writes the result, step by step. Here it turns a folder of receipts into a spending summary, all on your own machine, nothing uploaded.
How you know what it really did
Every message between the agent and its brain passes through a recorder, and a copy drops into an append-only logbook the AI can read but can never change or erase. You never let the AI write its own history.
Updating the brain, on purpose only
The machine touches the internet only to install a new or bigger brain, and only through a two-key door: two deliberate steps in two places that can never open by accident, and it shuts itself again.
The locks get tested, every hour
More than fifty checks run every hour: can anything reach the internet, can the AI touch the record, are the walls still up. Every one must pass, and a failure is a loud alarm, never a silent surprise.
Everything, at once
The whole setup as one machine: your laptop sends a question in through a single encrypted tunnel, the agent works it out with its brain and your files, every step is recorded, and the answer comes back, while nothing ever crosses to the internet. One ordinary PC with one RTX 3050 6 GB graphics card.
You can build this too
One ordinary PC, one graphics card, a few small free programs and a handful of rules. The small brain is the lesson, not the hardware. Holding your own data and running your own AI is a skill we should all learn, and our children most of all.
FAQ
Can an AI really run on a normal home PC? Yes, a smaller model runs on a single graphics card with a few gigabytes of memory. Why keep it off the internet instead of trusting a provider? Trust is a promise; no internet is a fact. What is the difference between a chatbot and an agent? A chatbot only writes text back; an agent opens files, writes files and runs commands on its own. Can I change the AI's brain? Yes, pick a model from a list in the interface as long as it fits your graphics card, then benchmark it.
